Best Inflatable SUPs for Beginners

The good news is that every current inflatable SUP owner has been a first timer at some point. They will have felt the same worries, made similar investigations, searched for opinions and reviews to help them make their own mind up.

It’s true, the inflatable SUP world is full of options that vary wildly and many people want different things from their ISUP, especially their first. Most simply want value for money and as high a quality board as possible.

These days it’s definitely possible, inflatable SUP board quality is dramatically improving as price is becoming more affordable. Luckily we’ve got you covered. Here’s our picks for the 3 inflatable SUPs that we think are perfect for first timers.

1

Z-Ray Pathfinder ISUP (99”)

PROS

  • Price: Unquestionably, if you’re looking for a board that won’t cost you a lot, the Pathfinder is a great choice.
  • Build Quality: For the price, the quality of the Pathfinder is very good and this board should last you a long time as long as you look after it and treat it with the respect it deserves!
  • Colours Available: If you’re passionate about how the board looks, and how you look on the board, then the Pathfinder comes in a range of colours including orange, red, green and blue.
  • Giant Anti-Slip Area: Relative to other inflatable SUPs on the market, the Pathfinder has a significant area on top of the board that is anti-slip, meaning that even if you’re not the most confident paddleboarder just yet, you’ll be able to get up and on the water without too many worries.

CONS

  • Stability: Watch out for this board’s stability. It’s quite a thin board for an inflatable SUP and there are wider boards on the market. So if you’re looking for the most stable option then look elsewhere. But if you’re comfortable with your balance and core strength then go for it!
2

Starboard Astro Whopper Deluxe Inflatable SUP (10'0")

PROS

  • Stability: Important for many first time buyers is the stability of the board, well the Starboard Astro Whopper has plenty of it. A full 35” wide and solid design means will stand you in good stead on the water.
  • Easy Setup: Many boards are the same in terms of taking them out of the bag and manually pumping them up, however the Astro Whopper goes that bit further making the fin attachment an absolute breeze.
  • Build Quality: The Astro Whopper can take it’s fair share of knocks- which are much more likely when you’re a first time inflatable SUP owner - and still perform just as well as the day you bought it.

CONS

  • Not a Fast Board: The Astro Whopper, when taken on flat water isn’t the fastest board around - yet if you’re a beginner then high speed boards are probably low on the list of your priorities. The Astro Whopper is more likely built for open water, which seems to suit it’s overall spec, but it makes for a fantastic flat water first timer ISUP too.
3

Ten Toes - The Weekender ISUP (10'0")

PROS

  • Versatile: A big, hefty board that is durable, strong and stable - what more can you want from a first time board!
  • Thickness and Quality: The board is a nice 6” thick meaning it provides easily enough stability for the most novice of ISUP owners.
  • Design: Without any question you’re going to look good on the water on The Weekender. It comes in a variety of colours too.
  • Comfort: The Weekender has a significant and comfortable anti-slip area meaning that if you’re not the most confident then The Weekender will have you covered in this department.

CONS

  • Speed: Much like the Astro Whopper, the Weekender is not the fastest inflatable SUP on the water. If you’re looking for something to zip around on then choose a different option - but then that’s unlikely if this is your first ISUP.
  • No Carry Bag: While easy to carry when rolled up, you may want to invest in the Ten Toes carry bag or backpack, even if just to make life easier. Yet this is obviously an additional cost that you’ll have to absorb.
